Mammography

Mammography

The Peony Suite advanced 3D mammogram machine

If you are over 35, then it is normal to have a mammogram as part of the examination. This is usually arranged before you see the doctor. The clinic staff will direct you and instructions may also be included with the clinic letter.

Unfortunately, because younger women’s breast tissue is that much firmer and more impenetrable to X-rays, mammography in under 35’s requires a higher dose of X-rays and even then the pictures tend to be of poor quality. This is why we do not routinely perform mammography in younger women.

Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT):

In our clinic we use 3D mammography (Tomosynthesis) which is the latest development in breast X-ray techniques and only available in a limited number of centres in the UK. If you want to know more about the technical details of tomosynthesis then please click here

We have over 18 month’s experience with this technique and consider it superior to normal 2D films. Not only do we get more detailed pictures but it also has the great advantage that the breast does not have to be squeezed as firmly and most people find the examination much more comfortable. When you go in to see the doctor, he or she will first run through the questionnaire with you and clarify your answers. Also, it is a chance to discuss any of the questions that you were unable to answer or did not understand fully.
